Can parents watch their child's Tae Kwon Do class?

When you watch, when you join in, and how to help from the side of the mat.

By Chung TKD

Three girls practice side kicks on the red mat while classmates sit at the edge and families watch from the lounge behind the glass.

Yes. At Chung TKD in New Hyde Park, parents are always welcome to watch their child's class. For the two free trial classes, a parent or guardian stays at the school, and in Mommy & Me, for ages 2 to 3, a parent does the class with their child on the mat.

Can I stay and watch a regular class?

Yes, any time. Parents are always welcome to watch, whatever their child's age or belt.

Do I need to stay for the trial classes?

Yes. Every new family starts with two free trial classes, and a parent or guardian stays at the school for both. Some children like to watch for a moment before they join in, and plenty jump straight in. Either way, you'll be there to see it. For more on the first visit, read what to expect at a first Tae Kwon Do class.

When do parents join in?

Only in Mommy & Me. From age 2, a parent does the class with their child. At 3½, children move up to the independent Pee-Wee class, and from then on parents watch rather than train.

Can families watch belt tests?

Yes. Grandmaster Howard Chung runs every belt test and the instructors demonstrate. Everyone has a seat and watches, and each test gets harder as the belts go up. Black belt tests are big occasions, and the school's past black belts come back for them.

Are there classes for parents too?

No. Chung TKD teaches kids only, ages 2 to 13, with older kids placed after a first class. Watching is how parents take part.

How can I help from the side of the mat?

Watch, cheer the effort and leave the teaching to the instructors. A child listening to two voices at once hears neither well, so save any corrections for later and ask an instructor after class what to work on. If your child is nervous, sit where they can see you. A wave from the side often does more than a word.
