How the two free trial classes work at Chung TKD

How the two free trial classes at Chung TKD work, step by step: who they are for, who stays, what your child wears, and what comes after.

Every new family at Chung TKD in New Hyde Park starts with two free trial classes, and a parent or guardian stays for both. Chung TKD teaches Tae Kwon Do, a Korean martial art, not karate, to children ages 2 to 13. Kids wear something comfortable, sweats or shorts, and the uniform comes if they sign up.

The school teaches three programs by age: Pee-Wee, Children and Youth. Grandmaster Howard Chung, 9th Dan, has taught Tae Kwon Do since 1970 and opened the school in 1984. This guide is by Master Chris J. Chung, 5th-degree black belt.

What are the two free trial classes?

They are your child's first two Tae Kwon Do classes at Chung TKD, and your family pays nothing for either one. This is how every new family starts, so you and your child can try the classes before you decide to join.

How do the two free trial classes work, step by step?

Here is the whole path, from booking to deciding.

  1. Find your child's program by age: Pee-Wee for ages 2 to 3, Children for ages 4 to 6, or Youth for ages 7 to 13.
  2. Book a free class online.
  3. Dress your child in something comfortable, sweats or shorts.
  4. Come to the first trial class together. A parent or guardian stays for it.
  5. Come back for the second free trial class, and stay for that one too.
  6. Decide with your child whether to join.

Who can take the free trial classes?

New families with a child ages 2 to 13 can, in the program for the child's age.

  • Pee-Wee, ages 2 to 3. The youngest start in Mommy & Me, and the independent Pee-Wee class follows at 3½.
  • Children, ages 4 to 6.
  • Youth, ages 7 to 13. A child moves up from Children to Youth by age, or earlier when the school thinks they are ready.

For a younger child, our guide to whether a 3-year-old is ready for Tae Kwon Do can help you decide when to book.

Does a parent have to stay for the free trial classes?

Yes. A parent or guardian stays at the school for each trial class. Our guide on whether parents can watch a class covers watching from the side of the mat.

What should my child wear to the first class?

Kids wear something comfortable, sweats or shorts. The uniform comes if they sign up. Our guide to a first Tae Kwon Do class covers what else helps on the day.

What happens in a trial class?

Your child takes a Tae Kwon Do class, and at Chung TKD, self-defense is part of class. Some children watch for a little while first, plenty jump right in, and many nervous ones soon forget they were nervous. The school's instructors teach the classes, and Grandmaster Chung leads the school.

Is Tae Kwon Do the same as karate?

No. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art, and Chung TKD teaches Tae Kwon Do, not karate. Our guide to Tae Kwon Do vs karate compares the two for a child.

Where are the free trial classes?

They are at Chung TKD, 1527 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park, NY 11040. Your child takes both trial classes at the school, with you there.

What happens after the two free trial classes?

Your family decides whether your child will join. If your child signs up, the uniform comes then, and you go over the membership terms in person at the school. After that, children earn a stripe for each class in which they review their curriculum. Below brown belt, they test for a new belt when their instructors say they are ready, and Grandmaster Chung runs every belt test. Our guides to how stripes work and the belt colors in order explain the path from there.
