Mommy & Me Tae Kwon Do: what a class for 2-year-olds looks like

What happens in a 30-minute Mommy & Me class, where a parent does the class with their child, and what changes at 3½.

At Chung TKD, children can start Tae Kwon Do at 2, in the Mommy & Me class, where a parent does the 30-minute class with their child on Saturday mornings. At 3½, children move up to the independent Pee-Wee class.

Mommy & Me is the first part of Pee-Wee, the school’s preschool Tae Kwon Do for ages 2 to 3: a playful introduction to focus, balance and listening, built for wiggly little bodies and short attention spans.

What happens in a Mommy & Me class

You and your child do the class together: a 30-minute obstacle course with rock climbing, basketball hoops and a Spider-Man climb on the incline mat, then basic punches, kicks, stretches and counting, and dodgeball at the end.

Like every Pee-Wee class, it practices following directions, balance and first kicks. Your child doesn’t need to know any Tae Kwon Do before the first class.

Saturday mornings, then independent at 3½

Mommy & Me and the independent Pee-Wee class that follows at 3½ both meet on Saturday mornings and last 30 minutes. Grandmaster Chung confirms the right class for your child’s age on the phone or at the first class.

Mommy & Me martial arts: Tae Kwon Do or karate?

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art. Many parents search for it as karate or preschool martial arts; at Chung TKD it is taught as Tae Kwon Do, in a school that teaches kids only. For why the class matters more than the name, see Tae Kwon Do vs karate.

Before the first class

  • Comfortable clothes. No uniform is needed for a first class.
  • Children train in bare feet. Bring a water bottle.
  • Arrive ten minutes early so your child can settle in before the bow-in.

If your child would rather watch the first time, that’s fine. Watching counts. More in Getting ready for your child’s first class.
