A martial arts summer camp suits a child who likes to stay active, can follow an instructor along with a group, and is curious about a martial art. At Chung TKD in New Hyde Park, summer camp runs on weekdays for six weeks each summer, and the school's black-belt instructors run it. If your child has never tried Tae Kwon Do, Chung TKD's two free trial classes let you both see how they take to it first.
Chung TKD teaches Tae Kwon Do, a Korean martial art, to children ages 2 to 13, in three programs by age: Pee-Wee, Children and Youth. Grandmaster Howard Chung, 9th Dan, has taught Tae Kwon Do since 1970 and opened the school in 1984. This guide is by Master Chris J. Chung, 5th-degree black belt.

It is a summer camp run by a martial arts school. Chung TKD runs its own summer camp, and the school also runs camps in winter and spring.
Is my child ready for a martial arts summer camp?
Your child is likely ready if you can answer yes to most of these five questions.
- Does your child like to run, jump and stay on the move?
- Can your child follow an instructor's directions along with a group of other kids?
- Is your child comfortable spending the day away from you?
- Is your child curious about Tae Kwon Do, or already enjoying classes?
- Would a weekday camp over the summer fit your family's plans?
If most answers are no for now, camp can wait for another summer, and the two free trial classes are a way to start Tae Kwon Do in the meantime. For a younger child, our guide to whether a 3-year-old is ready for Tae Kwon Do can help you decide where to begin.
