How to choose a kids Taekwondo school in Nassau County

Ask these five questions at any school you visit. Here is how Chung TKD answers each one.

• Are classes grouped by age?Yes. Kids train in three age groups: Pee-Wee for ages 2 to 3, Children for ages 4 to 6 and Youth for ages 7 to 13. Pee-Wee starts with Mommy & Me, and children move to the independent class at 3½. A child moves up from Children to Youth by age, or sooner with the staff’s permission once they’re ready.
• Who teaches, and what rank do they hold?The school’s professional instructors teach the classes. Grandmaster Howard Chung, 9th Dan, leads the school and runs every belt test. He has taught Tae Kwon Do since 1970 and trained in the direct lineage of Supreme Grand Master Jhoon Rhee.
• Can my child try a class first?Yes. Every new family starts with two free trial classes. Kids wear something comfortable, like sweats or shorts, and the uniform comes if they sign up.
• Can parents watch?Yes. A parent or guardian stays at the school for trial classes, and at belt tests everyone has a seat and watches.
• How do kids get ready for belt tests?In class. Kids earn stripes in classes where they review their curriculum, and instructors check whether a child is ready after a set number of classes and stripes. Below brown belt, a child tests when their instructors say they’re ready, with no fixed test dates. Black belt tests are big events, and the school’s past black belts come back for them.
