History of the Hyungs
(Forms) Chon-Ji Hyung: The literal meaning of Chon-ji,
the name of the first hyung of the Chang-Hon
School, is "heaven and earth" which in the Orient symbolizes the
creation of the world or human history. Containing 19 movements, it is indeed
a fitting name for the hyung a beginner learns. Tan-Gun Hyung: The second pattern of the Chang-Hon School, which
contains 21 movements, is named after legendary Korean hero who reputedly
founded Korea in 2334 B.C. To-San Hyung: The name of this pattern commemorates the pseudonym
of a great Korean patriot and educator Ahn Ch'ang Ho (1876-1938). This pattern contains 24
movements. Won-Hyo Hyung: Won-Hyo was the noted monk
who introduced Buddhism to the Silla Dynasty in the
year 686 A.D. Yul-Kok Hyung: Yul-Kok is the pseudonym of a great philosopher and
scholar, Yi I (1586-1584 A.D.) who was nicknamed the "Confucius of
Korea". The 38 movements of this pattern represents
the 38 degree latitude of Yul-Kok's birthplace, and
the diagram represents "scholar". Chung-Gun Hyung: Named after the patriot An Chung-Gun. The 32
movements in this pattern represent the age at which Mr. An was martyred in prision in 1910. Toi-Gye Hyung: Toi-Gye is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang, an
authority on neo-Confucianism. The 37 movements of the pattern refer to his
birthplace on the 37th degree latitude, and the diagram represents the word
"scholar". Hwa-Rang Hyung: Hwa-Rang is named after the Hwa-Rang
youth group which originated in the Silla Dynasty
about 1,350 years ago and became the actual driving force for the unification
of the three Kingdoms of Korea. Chung-Mu Hyung: Chung-Mu was the given
name of the great Admiral Yi Sun-Sin of the Yi Dynasty who was reputed to
have invented the first armoured battleship-the
precursor of the present-day submarine-in 1592 A.D. The left-hand attack
ending this pattern symbolizes his regrettable death in battle before he had
a chance to show his complete loyalty to the King. |
